Croatia Through the Glass: A Trilogy of Wine Tastings *In-Person* *NEW*
Croatian winemaking history dates back to Roman and even ancient Greeks. Croatian wines are produced in four different regions. Shaped with significant differences in geography and climate, each region has its own specifics, varieties and customs. Join a native Croatian, Mirena Bagur, founder of Croatian Premium Wine, as she unfolds stories of each region, intertwined with history, geography and winemaking traditions, supported with video presentations. Each session will include 5-6 wines and you will also hear about the best pairings. Croatia 1 of 3: North Croatia: Uplands and Slavonia Rounded, rolling hills in the Northwest of Croatia surround the capital Zagreb ? it is the coolest wine region in the country. Characterized with small, family-owned vineyards, they primarily grow international varieties that have a special terroir twist ? from Pinots to Sauvignon, and the sparkling wines. As one heads East toward Slavonia, the region is framed with three rivers including the Danube. The rich soil and the sunny weather in this moderate continental climate produce wines that are ripe with accentuated fruity characteristics. We will taste Gra?evina, the ubiquitous white variety in many expressions from sparkling to still and orange, as well as dry Traminac, with its floral notes. And you will hear about the Slavonian cuisine. Croatia 2 of 3: Istria ? Influence of Adriatic and the Alps Istria is a large peninsula with mostly terra rosa soil, but it also has three other soil types. Vineyards can be on any altitude, from almost sea level or fairly high up - as the region climbs into the Alps. The constant winds from the sea to the mountains and back provide a perfect climate for growing Malvasia Istriana, a fresh, white variety great with seafood dishes or pasta, or red Teran which has recently reached its peak qualities with new techniques in both viticulture and winemaking. Istrian winemakers produce internationally acclaimed wines, and we will taste several expresions of coastal and inland Malvasia and Teran. Get ready for intense aromas and tannins perfect for pairings in the Fall, paired with some Istrian recipes. Croatia 3 of 3: Dalmatia -- Coastal and Island Wines Dalmatia, the most southern wine region on the Adriatic Sea, is blessed with many islands and wine varieties. In fact, two thirds of Croatian indigenous varieties originate in this region. You will learn about the geography, variations in climate on the islands and inland, and taste different expressions of white, crisp Po?ip. You will hear the story of Zinfandel as a parent of the country?s predominant red variety -- Plavac Mali, and compare the terroir from Brac, Komarna or Pelje?ac. Explore the international and indigenous blends as you start thinking of rosemary or sage dishes to pair them with. Instructor: Mirena Bagur
